Two conversations with Germans

We are at the Station Schlachtensee and want to get back home. It seems that soon it will begin to rain:

- A: So, we can walk back home, or we could wait here, take the train just one stop, and then walk home.
- Me: Good. Let's wait for the train.
-A: But I think that it takes exactly the same amount of time to walk than to wait+train+walk.
- Me: Good. Let's wait then.
- A: But... Haha... I got it: "Mexican lazyness".
-Me: Whatever...

* * *

I take out the old newspapers, go to the corner, and put them in their paper-container. Bad luck! The neighbors who live there are just coming back home, they stop the car, and he looks really angry. She even stops the engine in the middle of street instead of parking. It seems to me that he comes from East Europe. She has stepped already out of the car and waits there. She looks calmer.

We discuss, I apologize, and then I promisse to never ever again do such criminal acts like taking advantage of their paper-container. He calms down and goes. But she is not that calm, and still has something to say:

She: So, let me guess: you come every now and then to put all your garbage in our containers, no?

Me: Not at all. Just sometimes [like 3 times per year] I bring old newspapers, and that's it.
She: You know that no German would ever dare to do something like that?
Me: ...
She: So don't get surprised if people complain about you, foreigners living here.
Me: Sure, all of us, all foreigners, are terrible people.
She: We are not enemies of foreigners, but just don't get surprised if people complain.
Me: Whatever...

Hipograph: Aristotle, Hegel

Both the Book Lambda of the Metaphysics and the Phänomenologie des Geistes end with two literary quotations:

ouk agathòn polukoiraníe: eîs koíranos éstw
(the rule of many is not good: let one be the ruler)

Homer, Iliad 2, 204

Friedrich Schiller, Die Freundschaft, 1782.

BTW: if you attend a Ph.D. Kolloquium in Berlin's Humboldt Universität you'll see Hegel's desk.

Tenochtitlan 487

Boros' bunker

After some months of waiting, finally came the 2nd of August, i.e. the day of my appointment to visit Christian Boros' bunker. This guy bought the (during the Cold War so called "Banana-bunker" and in the 90's the "Techno-club-bunker") and moved in. On the top, he built an exact copy of Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavillon.

The collection is awesome, despite of a couple of works which I didn't like at all, or I reject as truly artistic (Santiago Sierra's documentation of some of his actions is a shame on its own). A lot of Olafur Elliason and some other artists whose names I just couldn't retain (most of them I didn't know). But I liked this a lot:

The Vietnam girl's interactive "Fountains" with water, cups and Duchamp's banks.

This marvelous lamp.

This sick guy by some Holland artist, which makes guests of the hotel who see them through the window and don't know what all this is about to call Reception.

This drawings by Elliason (or one of his relatives? ... not sure): he sat on a boat and didn't move the pencil, but the sea itself moved the table and the paper. This is somehow the visual version of Zadar's sea orgel.

Another Elliason work: light projected to a screen through a mirror and steam.

"For whom the bell" is the first work, and somehow it repeats Kandinsky's idea of "seeing" the sound of music. The bell moves with increasingly speed, but since it lacks of clapper. Nonetheless, due to it's velocity, you're able to hear the air waving in the inside rim. Fantastic!

Andy's beach

Some weeks ago, while driving close to Ku'damm, the corner of my eye saw the name "Andy Goldsworthy" written on the top of a door. A few days later I went to see what could that be, and I discovered a cozy gallery with drawings and paintings of Andy. That's how I learned that in the late 80s, Andy started experimenting with snow, mud and other elements which let melt on paper or carton, like this Snowball Drawing.

And now, some days ago, X discovered this beach full of little and nice art works which reminded me immediately of Andy Goldsworthy. I wonder how people began to organize themselves for working on this sculpure field or beach.

Art imitates religion

Thinking about art and religion, I came up to four elements which art might have taken from religion, or that at least are incredibly close:

* The ready made is similar to the saint's relic. The saint touched this glass, or sat on this chair, or wore this dress, and then it belongs to another ontological level. This is more or less Duchamp's principle of the ready made: the artist's touch gives to the ordinary object another dimension, and then it doesn't belong anymore to the common world, but to the art's.

* Religious people believe in divine predilection, and feel somehow as chosen by God. In a similar way, artists feel as unique, touched by some Muse.

* The shrine or church is a sacred space filled with veneration and silence. Now, museums have replaced churches, and people visit more often the museums than the churches (some even visit churches not to pray, but to admire the building and the paintings with the same veneration and silence of the pilgrims. Think of St. Peter's basilica, for instance).

* Christian ascetism has invented the examination of the own conscience. With an analogous strategy, (occidental) art has created critic.

There are many other things to talk about. Let's leave them for another day.

¡Prohibido leer! ¡Prohibido pensar!

* * *

Coda

JonFen begins where Paz ends

I was reading this evening "Conjunciones y disyunciones", by Octavio Paz, and this passus remind me immediately of JonFen's "Everything Is Illuminated".

Conjunciones y disyunciones (Obras completas 10), p.153

"From space, astronauts can see people making love as a tiny speck of light. Not light, exactly, but a glow that could be mistaken for light --a coital radiance that takes generations to pour like honey through the darkness to the astronaut's eyes.

In about one and a half centuries --after the lovers who made the glow will have long since been laid permanently on their backs-- metropolises will be seen from space. They will glow all year. Smaller cities will also be seen, but with great difficulty. Sthetls will be virtually impossible to spot. Individual couples, invisible.

The glow is born from the sum of thousands of loves: newlyweds and teenagers who spark like lighters out or butane, pairs of men who burn fast and bright, pairs of women who illuminate for hours with soft multiple glows, orgies like rock and flint toys sold at festivals, couples trying unsuccessfully to have children who burn their frustrated image on the continent like the bloom a bright light leaves on the eye after you turn away from it.

Some nights, some places are a little brighter. It's difficult to stare at New York City on Valentine's Day, or Dublin on St. Patrick's. The old walled city of Jerusalem lights up like a candle on each of Chanukahs' eight nights. Trachimday is the only time all year when the tiny village of Trachimbrod can be seen from space, when enough copulative voltage is generated to sex the Polish-Ukranian skies electric. We're here, the glow of 1804 will say in one and a half centuries. We're here, and we're alive".

Get the hell out of here, crazy gringo!

There's a mythical story about a crazy gringo, who wanted and even tried to buy the Paricutín volcano in Michoacán. I thought it was kind of a myth, as I said before, but I found some weeks ago the original story on Time (Monday, Jan. 29, 1945). There are some mistakes in the text, but I'll leave them just for the sake of reading the original version...

Please notice his three reasons to buy a volcano!

(Still have to know more about Douglas Tompkins, another crazy gringo buying lakes and mountains).

"Cartoonist Robert L. ("Believe It or Not") Ripley believed last week that he was about to become the owner of a volcano. He had been negotiating for the purchase of Paricutin, the volcano which poked through the cornfield of Mexican Farmer Dionisio Pulido, on Feb. 20, 1943, and quickly grew into a 1,500-ft. mountain, belching flame, smoke and lava. This week the cartoonist, after delicate and mysterious negotiations, expected to clinch the deal.

During New Year's Eve festivities in Havana, somebody told Ripley that Paricutin was for sale. He already had a gilt telephone, an apartment crammed .with hundreds of statuettes, swords, costumes, paintings, vases and two secretaries—one American, one Chinese. But he did not own a volcano. He wanted Paricutin because: 1) as a boy he had always wanted a volcano; 2) it might fill a spiritual void; 3) it might (because of minerals) prove a good investment.

Skeptics pointed out several difficulties that Ripley might encounter. Farmer Pulido had disappeared. In any case, his title to the volcano was somewhat hazy. Mexican law frowned on foreign landowners and the Mexicans might want to keep their volcano themselves."

Madonna: Dresden, Schönhauser Allee

The Kitsch conquered and won for herself the image of the putti below the Madonna Sistina by Rafaello Sanzio in Dresden. We all are tired of those postcards and posters.

In Berlin's S-Bahn station "Schönhauser Allee" appeared some days ago a nice version of this painting. We can call it "La madonna del gatto" or even "La madonna del'Audi". The artist succesfully chose not to depict the stupid putti.

"Te engañas, no has vivido", de Enrique González Martínez

Te engañas, no has vivido...

Te engañas, no has vivido mientras tu paso incierto
surque las lobregueces de tu interior a tientas;

No to the lourdesation of Ronchamp!

Architecht Renzo Piano plans to build a monastery for Clarisses and facilities for visitors next to Le Corbusier's Ronchamp. The main project is called La Porterie (Une nouvelle construction pour accueillir. Une bâtiment pour les contemplatives).

Obviously it is a shame!

The Fondation Le Corbusier has undestood the problem quite well: facilities are indeed needed, but Piano's project would interfere with the original plans of Le Corbusier. The trees and the hill should be conserved.

In March 1959, the priest René Bolle-Reddat ask Le Corbusier about building a small hotel for the visitors. Of course not! He just replied: «Vous voulez refaire Lourdes».

Hopefully Le Corbusier's work will be soon included in the Unesco's heritage list, in order to protect it better from some stupid ideas...

I strongly recomend Gilles Ragot approach to the situation: La colline et la chapelle (unfortunately I wasn't able to access the pdf format, and the html lacks of the graphics).

Writing, reading and thinking...

[Fragment of "Is Google Making Us Stupid?", by Nicholas Carr.]

Sometime in 1882, Friedrich Nietzsche bought a typewriter—a Malling-Hansen Writing Ball, to be precise. His vision was failing, and keeping his eyes focused on a page had become exhausting and painful, often bringing on crushing headaches. He had been forced to curtail his writing, and he feared that he would soon have to give it up. The typewriter rescued him, at least for a time. Once he had mastered touch-typing, he was able to write with his eyes closed, using only the tips of his fingers. Words could once again flow from his mind to the page.

But the machine had a subtler effect on his work. One of Nietzsche’s friends, a composer, noticed a change in the style of his writing. His already terse prose had become even tighter, more telegraphic. “Perhaps you will through this instrument even take to a new idiom,” the friend wrote in a letter, noting that, in his own work, his “‘thoughts’ in music and language often depend on the quality of pen and paper.”

“You are right,” Nietzsche replied, “our writing equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts.” Under the sway of the machine, writes the German media scholar Friedrich A. Kittler, Nietzsche’s prose “changed from arguments to aphorisms, from thoughts to puns, from rhetoric to telegram style.”

Un petit hommage à Doisneau...

Dionisio Pulido by Walter Reuter

Some weeks ago I discovered in the university's library of old & used books the catalogue of an exhibition about Walter Reuter (Berlin 1906-Cuernavaca 2005), the guy who revolutionized the photo-journalism in Mexico.

The adventures of his life are worth a reading, and his pictures are amazing. He used to work with the Magnum photographers and with Manuel Álvarez Bravo, among many others. Like Dr. Atl, we also worked several years on the Paricutín volcano. He also was the cameraman of the film "Raíces", which won a prize in Cannes (1955).

By the way: this is the best portrait of Dionisio Pulido I have ever seen. Since it was not on the internet, I scanned it (
Neue Gesellschaft für Bildende Kust e.V., "Walter Reuter. Berlin, Madrid, Mexiko. 60 Jahre.

I
toca a menos,
lo único cierto es que todos
aquí
estamos a medio morir

yendo a tientas
Santo Dios, Santo Inmortal.
